The downfall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in Bangladesh has left the Bangladeshi diaspora in the UK experiencing a mix of joy and fear. Prime Minister Hasina resigned and fled the country, sparking a range of reactions.

UK-based student groups had been protesting in solidarity with movements in Bangladesh against a divisive job quota system, escalating into anti-government demonstrations. This news was met with celebrations in the British-Bangladeshi restaurant industry, which makes up a significant part of the 650,000-strong diaspora.

"We are very happy; it is our independence day," said Babul Choudhury, manager of Sonargaon restaurant in Whitechapel. Despite the jubilant scenes, some community members remain worried about their families in Bangladesh.

A Union of Bangladeshi Students' protest in Whitechapel transformed into a celebration upon hearing the news of Hasina's resignation. Amnesty International and other human rights organizations condemned the government's harsh crackdown on student protesters fighting against a job quota system that protesters claimed favored government supporters.

The future for Hasina remains uncertain, with speculation about her seeking refuge in the UK. The UK Foreign Secretary has called for a UN investigation into the recent violence, which could impact any potential asylum bid by Hasina in the UK.
