High-Profile Exits: Bangladesh's Political Turmoil
Bangladesh's former foreign minister Hassan Mahmud and ex-state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak were detained at Dhaka airport attempting to flee the country. This follows Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation amid deadly protests. Several top officials have also fled, leading to increased political instability and uncertainty.
In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh's former foreign minister Hassan Mahmud and ex-state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak were detained at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday while attempting to flee the country. This comes a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled following fierce protests against her administration.
Mahmud, who served in the deposed Hasina government, was intercepted trying to board a flight to Delhi. Airport Aviation Security (AVSEC) officials confirmed his detention as he attempted to flee. Earlier, Mahmud had unsuccessfully tried to cross the border into India via a land port.
Simultaneously, former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak was also detained and subsequently handed over to the Air Force, which now manages the airport's security. Reports indicate that several other top leaders and cabinet ministers, including Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader and education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, have also fled the country amidst the political chaos.
