In a startling revelation, Colombian President Gustavo Petro was the alleged target of a possible attack during a public event in downtown Bogotá this past July. Defense Minister Iván Velásquez confirmed this on Thursday but refrained from offering any concrete evidence or further information.

Petro's delayed arrival at the traditional military parade on July 20, which marked the 214th anniversary of Colombia's independence from Spain, was reportedly due to unverified security concerns. According to one of Petro's closest allies, Gustavo Bolívar, the delay was linked to warnings from the U.S. embassy.

Petro, Colombia's first leftist president and a former rebel, has been a frequent target of threats, both during his election campaign and since taking office in 2022. Despite promoting a 'total peace' plan aimed at negotiating with powerful armed groups, violence remains a significant issue in the country.
