A delegation of BJP MPs met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday to voice their concerns regarding the Supreme Court's recent observation on identifying a 'creamy layer' among the Scheduled Castes (SC) and the Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Following the meeting, PM Modi stated on X, 'Met a delegation of SC/ST MPs today. Reiterated our commitment and resolve for the welfare and empowerment of the SC/ST communities.' This came after Supreme Court judge Justice B R Gavai suggested on August 1 that states should develop a policy to identify the creamy layer within the SCs and STs to deny them reservation benefits.

Sikander Kumar, a BJP Rajya Sabha member part of the delegation, told PTI, 'We were all concerned over the Supreme Court's observation. We received numerous phone calls from worried individuals.' The prime minister held a serious discussion with the MPs and assured them that the government would prevent the implementation of the Supreme Court's suggestion. Kulaste said their memorandum to the prime minister requested that the apex court's observation should not be enforced. PM Modi assured the delegation that this would not apply to the SC and ST categories.
