U.S. Offers Russia Sanctions Relief for Ukraine Peace Talks
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggests potential relief from U.S. sanctions against Russia if it negotiates peace in Ukraine. Talks with China on economic rebalance are also planned. Meanwhile, President Trump may meet President Putin. Bessent criticizes Ukrainian President Zelenskiy on a minerals supply deal issue.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that Russia might receive sanctions relief if it shows a willingness to negotiate an end to its war in Ukraine. In an interview with Bloomberg, Bessent also disclosed plans to engage with his Chinese counterpart to advocate for economic reforms aimed at boosting consumer spending.
When questioned about the potential increase or reduction of sanctions depending on the progress of Ukraine peace talks, Bessent confirmed the likelihood of adjustments. President Donald Trump has hinted at a possible meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the conflict, but Bessent did not provide specific timing.
Bessent leveled criticism at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy over a stalled $500 billion minerals deal intended to strengthen U.S.-Ukraine ties. Meanwhile, dialogue with China's Vice Premier He Lifeng is on the agenda to further economic discussions, continuing a long history of urging China toward consumption-driven growth.
