The Congress has launched a sharp critique against Prime Minister Narendra Modi concerning the recent deportation of Indians to Panama by the US authorities. Congress general secretary K C Venugopal raised questions about the treatment of the deportees, labeling it as an affront to the nation.
Venugopal expressed confusion over why Indians are being sent to Panama rather than being repatriated to India directly, and demanded details on any possible deals made between Modi and President Donald Trump. The deportees, part of a larger group of 299 migrants, were flown to Panama over the last week.
Panama has confirmed the safe arrival of the deportees, and the Indian embassy is liaising with the Panamanian government to ensure their welfare. Amid Trump's crackdown on illegal immigrants, three batches of Indians have already been sent back from the US to India.
