In a move challenging the forthcoming 2026 delimitation exercise, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Tiruchi Siva has appealed to the central government to identify alternatives to the population-centric process. He warned that southern states, including Tamil Nadu, could face unfavorable outcomes, leading to a misrepresentation in Parliament.
Siva voiced his concerns in an interview with ANI, noting that states like Tamil Nadu could see a significant reduction in seats if the delimitation follows current population figures. Highlighting disparities in birth control measures between regions, he predicted a sharp decrease in southern representation, and an increase for others.
Echoing Siva's sentiments, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has solicited support from fellow state leaders, condemning the exercise as an attack on federalism. The ruling Congress party, though supportive, has yet to commit to a joint action meeting to address these fears of marginalization.
