The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a showcause notice to Lakhan Lal Dewangan, the Chhattisgarh minister, following the election of a party rebel as chairperson of the Korba Municipal Corporation.
The recent election saw BJP corporator Nutan Singh Thakur triumph over the party's official candidate, Hitanand Agrawal, raising eyebrows within party ranks. Thakur secured 33 votes against Agrawal's 16, with an independent candidate trailing at 18 votes.
State BJP general secretary Jagdish Ramu Rohra cited Dewangan's media statements post-election as a breach of party discipline. Under orders from state unit president Kiran Singh Deo, Dewangan has been given 48 hours to respond. Meanwhile, Thakur has been expelled from the BJP for six years.
