Turbulent Relations: The Uncertain Putin-Trump Meeting
The Kremlin has expressed uncertainty about a meeting between Presidents Putin and Trump due to global tensions. While Putin is open to discussions, complex preparations are needed. Despite multiple phone calls, face-to-face talks remain unpredictable amid ongoing issues like the Ukraine conflict and strained U.S.-Russia ties.
ST PETERSBURG, Russia, June 20 (Reuters) - The Kremlin expressed uncertainty on Friday about whether a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump would occur this year, citing global turbulence as a major factor. Despite indicating Putin's willingness for an in-person meeting, the Kremlin highlighted the complexity and need for extensive expert-level preparation.
Five phone calls have already taken place between the two leaders, with the latest occurring on Saturday, yet the probability of a direct meeting remains uncertain. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked on the volatile nature of the world, implying unpredictable elements like the Israel-Iran conflict could affect such plans.
Compounding the difficulty, the U.S. recently canceled upcoming bilateral talks aimed at resolving irritants in U.S.-Russia relations. According to Peskov, while Moscow maintains dialogue about Ukraine peace settlements, disagreements persist regarding the coupling of these negotiations with bilateral ties. Nonetheless, hopes remain for a resolution and new talks in the near future.
