Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Wednesday, launched a scathing attack on the Congress, stressing the importance of remembering the 'dark days of Emergency'. He accused the Congress of attempting to pose as protectors of the Constitution that they once 'strangled'.

Sarma's remarks came in a post on X, marking 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas', a day observed to commemorate the imposition of the Emergency by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975. He paid tribute to the 'brave men and women' who stood firm to uphold the Constitution during those times.

Marking 50 years since the Emergency, which lasted nearly two years, Sarma highlighted the courageous efforts and sacrifices that led to the Congress's defeat, ending 'a shameful chapter' in Indian history. He reiterated the significance of June 25, calling it a reminder of the darkest chapter of Indian democracy.
