The Tamil Nadu BJP has criticized the police department's move to petition the court for the cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to Madurai Aadheenam, alleging that the pontiff is being harassed under the pretext of an inquiry. The BJP claims this is a diversion from the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
According to the BJP, the pontiff faced questioning for over an hour, with activists accusing him of making false claims against a particular religious group. The Tamil Nadu BJP President, Nainar Nagenthran, questions whether the DMK government aims to gain votes by causing distress to Hindu leaders and suppress spiritual thought.
Former BJP state president K Annamalai condemned the police's move, alleging it had ulterior motives. He urged the DMK to withdraw the petition and focus instead on serious crimes plaguing the state, rather than targeting the Aadheenam, especially after his recent surgery.
