An armed group attack on a military base in northern Burkina Faso has claimed the lives of about 50 soldiers, as reported by local sources on Tuesday.
Suspected to be the work of the Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin group (JNIM), the attack took place on Monday at a base in Dargo, Boulsa province. Witness accounts describe around 100 militants involved in the attack, with reports of the assailants burning and looting the premises following the killings.
The military government has yet to publicly recognize the attack. JNIM, a key perpetrator in West Africa's ongoing conflict, is responsible for numerous civilian and military deaths. The growing frequency of such attacks is linked to political upheavals in Burkina Faso, marked by consecutive coups and the leadership struggles faced by military head Ibrahim Traore.
