In a significant geopolitical move, Australia will recognise a Palestinian state, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday. This aligns with similar sentiments recently expressed by France, Britain, and Canada. The decision comes amid rising criticism of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Albanese confirmed that Australia's recognition would be formalised at the United Nations General Assembly in September, based on specific commitments from the Palestinian Authority that exclude Hamas from government and require the demilitarisation of Gaza.
Critics, including Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu, have expressed disappointment with Australia's stance. Meanwhile, Albanese insists this move is not merely symbolic but a practical step toward a two-state resolution, engaging leaders from nations including France, New Zealand, and Japan.
