The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Sunday named Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its official candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election. This announcement has stirred varied reactions from opposition leaders within the INDIA alliance, with discussions ongoing about the political implications of the selection.

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav addressed reporters, questioning the absence of a current Vice President and emphasizing the INDIA alliance's need for consultation before making a definitive decision. He noted the influence of senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh in endorsing Radhakrishnan, suggesting further dialogue could be necessary.

Veteran SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav expressed preference for consensus on constitutional positions like the Vice Presidency, indicating that further insights into Radhakrishnan's candidacy are needed. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi acknowledged Radhakrishnan's strong administrative record, hoping his potential election would restore the role's dignity.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena colleague Sanjay Raut cautiously approved of Radhakrishnan while highlighting broader political challenges, such as alleged vote theft, as critical concerns. The INDIA alliance continues to deliberate over its stance as the election approaches.

The Vice Presidential election, expected to feature a contest between the NDA's nominee and an unannounced candidate from the INDIA bloc, will be held on September 9. Radhakrishnan, currently the 24th Governor of Maharashtra, took office on July 31, 2024.

The Election Commission has set the last date for filing nominations on August 21, with withdrawals allowed until August 25. The Vice Presidency became vacant following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, citing health reasons.
