Police in Jakarta resorted to tear gas and water cannons to disperse numerous demonstrators attempting to breach Indonesia's parliament building. The protest targeted alleged excessive pay and benefits enjoyed by legislators, a contentious issue in Southeast Asia's largest economy.
Participants, some wearing dark-colored clothing, hurled rocks and ignited fireworks, clashing with riot police. They called for reducing parliamentary salaries, reportedly over 100 million rupiah monthly, contrasting sharply with the country's average income.
The demonstrators also condemned government corruption and increased military influence in civilian matters under President Prabowo Subianto. A Japanese manga series flag symbolized growing dissent against prevailing government policies.
