In a significant move, the Supreme Court has authorized the sale and use of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR ahead of Diwali, aiming to strike a balance between festive celebrations and environmental safeguards. Delhi Law Minister Kapil Mishra extended his thanks to the court and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for advocating the public's interest.
Mishra remarked that the previous administration under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) could have taken similar infrastructure measures, accusing them of intentionally undermining Hindu festivals. The court has sanctioned the sale and use of green firecrackers from October 18 to 21, dictating specific timings for usage under Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandra.
The court underscored the necessity for a controlled and moderate celebration to protect the environment. It further instructed police in the region to patrol and ensure the sale of permissible firecrackers only. Moreover, the bench highlighted limitations on crackers not officially sanctioned as 'green.' The Central Pollution Control Board has been tasked to observe and report on the effects of the fireworks, setting a framework for environmentally conscious festivities.
