Exiled Leader Sheikh Hasina Fights for Awami League's Electoral Future
Exiled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declares the intention to boycott Bangladesh's upcoming elections after the Awami League was barred from participation. Maintaining her stance from New Delhi, Hasina stresses the need for electoral legitimacy while countering charges from the International Crimes Tribunal.
Exiled in New Delhi, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that millions of Awami League supporters will boycott next year's national election. This development comes after the party was barred from contesting the polls.
Hasina, aged 78, emphasized she would not return to Bangladesh under any government formed from these elections. Her stance is clear amid her exile since August 2024, following a deadly student-led uprising. Presently, Bangladesh is under the governance of an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who has scheduled elections for next February.
Tensions remain high with Hasina facing potential charges relating to a violent crackdown during student protests, resulting in significant casualties. Despite these challenges, Hasina hopes for a future role for the Awami League in Bangladeshi politics, advocating for a return to constitutional rule and political stability.
