Unrest Erupts Amid Controversial Tanzanian Election
Violent protests in Dar es Salaam erupted as President Hassan is expected to win the election following the disqualification of leading opposition candidates. Internet disruptions and unverified protest videos appeared on social media. The opposition claimed the election as unfair and akin to a 'coronation'.
On Wednesday, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city, was rocked by violent protests during an election expected to favor President Samia Suluhu Hassan. This unrest followed the disqualification of key opposition figures, drawing widespread attention and criticism.
Nationwide, internet services faced disruptions, according to monitor group NetBlocks, as unverified videos showing young protesters engaging with security forces circulated online. A witness described protesters heading towards the pivotal Selander Bridge amid mounting tensions.
The election proceeded without CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu, facing treason charges he disputes. Disqualifications left only minor parties to challenge Hassan. The opposition criticized the electoral process as a mere 'coronation'. Low turnout was observed as polls closed at 4 p.m., with results expected within days.
