European leaders convened in South Africa on Saturday to explore alternative approaches to a contentious US peace plan aiming to end Russia's conflict in Ukraine. The plan has raised concerns in Kyiv and European capitals for perceived favoritism towards Moscow, as expressed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
On the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Johannesburg, European countries demonstrated solidarity with Ukraine, underscoring their stake in the fight against Russian aggression. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President António Costa announced the talks following their discussions with Zelenskyy.
The proposed US deal, which suggests Ukraine concede territory and limits its NATO aspirations, has been met with skepticism, as European allies uphold a principle of 'nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.' Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone strike on a Russian fuel refinery heightened tensions in the ongoing conflict.
