Union Minister and BJP President J P Nadda launched a scathing attack on the opposition Congress on Thursday, accusing it of being opportunistic and failing to give the national song, Vande Mataram, the respect it deserves.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha during the debate on Vande Mataram, Nadda clarified that the government's aim was not to tarnish the image of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, but rather to set the historical records straight.
Nadda, who holds the position of Leader of the House, criticized the Congress for citing the Nehruvian era to claim credit when beneficial while shifting blame to others in adverse situations. He further pointed out that the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, lacks provisions for penalizing those who disrespect the national song.
