President Donald Trump's attempt to redraw Indiana's congressional map and secure Republican control in the U.S. House of Representatives confronts a critical moment on Thursday with the Indiana Senate's impending vote on its approval.
Despite intensive lobbying by the White House, the map's passage remains uncertain. Republicans dominate the Senate with a 40-10 majority; however, dissent exists, including from Senate leader Rodric Bray. The proposed map could ensure a 9-0 Republican sweep in Indiana. Trump's influence includes threats against senators opposing the map.
Redistricting usually follows the U.S. Census at each decade's onset, but Trump's early push has sparked a national redistricting tussle after Texas redrew its districts favorably for Republicans. Similarly, Democrats in California undertook redistricting efforts. With only three Republican seats needing a flip, Democrats have an opportunity to reclaim House majority next year.
