In Budapest, tens of thousands rallied on Saturday in a protest spearheaded by Viktor Orban's main political rival, Peter Magyar. Demonstrators expressed outrage over shocking allegations of child abuse in state-run juvenile institutions, an issue already causing significant trouble for Orban's administration following a scandal last year.
The protest was sparked by recent videos showing employees at a juvenile correction facility physically assaulting children. The former facility head, now in police custody, is accused of running a prostitution ring and subjecting minors to physical and sexual misconduct.
Magyar, riding a wave of political momentum, accused Orban's government of neglecting to protect vulnerable children and called for Orban's resignation. With elections on the horizon, this scandal presents a significant challenge for a government already critiqued for past inaction on similar issues.
