In a troubling turn of events, violence erupted in West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district as protests against the Summary Intermediate Report (SIR) of electoral rolls escalated. A government office was vandalized, and a police inspector suffered injuries during the chaos on Thursday.
The chain of unrest began on Wednesday at Murshidabad's Farakka, highlighting the mounting political tensions surrounding the review of voter lists prior to the state's Assembly elections. Responding promptly, the Election Commission issued strict instructions to local administrations to mitigate further disruptions.
The protests intensified when demonstrators, many of whom were summoned for SIR verification hearings, blocked key routes in Kahata, clogging traffic and raising alarm. Amid this turmoil, the district police have been on high alert, deploying additional personnel to manage potential future outbreaks.
