The Congress party's commanding victory in the Latur Municipal Corporation elections on Friday highlighted the persistent political influence of late stalwart Vilasrao Deshmukh in central Maharashtra. His legacy continues to resonate with the electorate, as reflected in the party's success.

State BJP chief Ravindra Chavan's campaign trail comments stating that Deshmukh's legacy would be "wiped out" appeared to backfire, as voters rallied in support of the Congress. Deshmukh, a former two-time chief minister, remains a popular figure in his hometown of Latur and the Marathwada region.

In the 70-member civic body, Congress secured 43 seats, while the BJP captured 22. This result sharply contrasts with the 2017 elections, where the BJP had emerged victorious with 36 seats.
