In the Malda district of West Bengal, 36-year-old Banoti Rajbanshi reportedly died by suicide after facing stress over document submissions for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, police said on Friday.
Banoti, unable to produce certain necessary documents like her birth certificate and her parents' death certificates, sought these from relatives without success. The mounting stress allegedly led her to consume poison at her home on Tuesday, with her death confirmed at Malda Medical College and Hospital on Friday.
Her tragic death ignited a political confrontation as the Trinamool Congress accused the BJP and the Election Commission of harassing people via indiscriminate notice issuance. The BJP countered, blaming the ruling party for the incidents, asserting they were isolated to West Bengal.
