The Congress launched a blistering attack on the BJP on Monday, condemning what it described as mistreatment of Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand. The party demanded the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, labelling the event as a 'shameful incident.'
The controversy ignited following a disruption the previous day, when police halted Swami Avimukteshwaranand and his followers from proceeding to the Sangam during a religious gathering. Superintendent of Police Neeraj Pandey stated that the Shankaracharya attempted to breach a barricade without prior permission amid a heavy influx of devotees, highlighting that public safety remained a priority.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera criticized the BJP's actions, asserting, 'Saints do not bow before kings.' He accused the government of deploying a troll army against the Swami for not acquiescing to their power. Despite the Shankaracharya's hunger strike following the incident, Khera expressed disappointment at the government's apparent indifference.
