Budapest has issued a warning to block the European Union's new sanctions package against Russia unless Russian oil deliveries to Hungary are resumed. This development comes as EU foreign ministers prepare for discussions in Brussels regarding the bloc's 20th round of sanctions against Moscow.

In a video statement, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó criticized Ukraine for allegedly obstructing Russian oil shipments through the Druzhba pipeline, crucial for Central Europe. Szijjártó affirmed that Hungary would not support the sanctions until oil shipments resume, reflecting growing tensions in the region.

The pipeline, damaged by purported Russian drone attacks, disrupts crude supply across Ukrainian territory. While most European nations have lessened Russian energy dependencies, Hungary and Slovakia maintain or increase imports. The friction extends to Hungary's opposition to a significant EU loan aimed at aiding Ukraine's military and economic efforts amidst geopolitical turbulence.
