Diplomatic Tensions: The Soleimani Case
U.S. federal agents detained the niece and grand-niece of Qassem Soleimani after Secretary of State Marco Rubio revoked their residency status. This action is linked to alleged support for Iran's government and comes amidst rising U.S.-Iran tensions. The event has raised concerns about free speech and due process.
U.S. federal agents have taken into custody the niece and grand-niece of the late Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani after Secretary of State Marco Rubio revoked their lawful permanent residency status. The two women, Hamideh Soleimani Afshar and her daughter, are currently detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to the State Department.
This detention marks a significant moment in the escalating conflict between the U.S. and Iran, with the U.S.-Israeli war against the country now entering its sixth week. The State Department alleges that Afshar supported the Iranian government's propaganda, resulting in the revocation of her green card. Her husband is also barred from entering the United States.
Furthermore, Rubio has terminated the legal status of Fatemeh Ardeshir-Larijani, the daughter of a prominent Iranian politician, and her husband. As tensions rise, concerns have been voiced by rights advocates regarding free speech and due process, especially as many immigrants detained by ICE have secured release following court orders.
