Decoding Party-Agnostic Local Elections in Himachal Pradesh

In a significant move for inclusive political processes, Himachal Pradesh's Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu indicated that upcoming elections for Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) would be non-partisan.

This announcement came during a briefing where discussions also touched upon the women's reservation bill, underscoring Congress's commitment to political reform. The chief minister highlighted Congress's historical efforts in enhancing women's political representation, citing initiatives by Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi.

Scheduled before May 31, the elections encompass over 3600 panchayats and several municipal bodies. Sukhu criticized the BJP for politicking on these reforms while emphasizing Congress's role in striving for equitable political structures.
