Electoral Tensions Rise Amid Peru's Election Delays
Calls for Piero Corvetto's removal as head of Peru's electoral authority increase amid delays and alleged irregularities in the presidential vote count. No clear challenger has emerged to face Keiko Fujimori. Business leaders and politicians demand changes as concerns about investor confidence and electoral integrity grow.
Calls for the removal of the head of Peru's electoral authority intensified on Friday due to delays and alleged irregularities clouding the presidential vote count. No clear challenger has emerged to face conservative frontrunner Keiko Fujimori in a June runoff.
Pressure is mounting on Piero Corvetto, head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), as allegations of errors during the April 12 election persist. Leftist Roberto Sanchez and ultraconservative Rafael Lopez Aliaga are neck and neck for second place. The final results may take up to two weeks.
Investor concerns over Sanchez's policies are partially offset by a likely right-leaning future Congress. Despite political volatility, Peru's economy is stable in Latin America.
