In a sharp rebuke to the BJP, Independent MP and former Union law minister Kapil Sibal on Saturday accused the ruling party of engaging in unconstitutional practices following the merger of seven AAP MPs into its fold, without a formal merger of their party. Citing defiance against India's Constitution, Sibal argued that proper merger procedures were not followed, with the Constitution requiring party consent before individual lawmakers align with another party.
Sibal also targeted the prime minister for his silence during global criticisms, most notably when former U.S. President Trump reportedly called India derogatory names. He questioned the courage of India's leadership, highlighting a lack of response that Sibal deemed indicative of larger political failures.
Highlighting a broader trend in Indian politics, Sibal discussed the influence of business interests in Parliament, attributing unchecked expansion of political power and mergers to such influences. He lambasted the BJP for eroding democratic norms since 2014, adding that these actions represent a grim chapter in India's political history.
