Media Magnate Offers Companies to State Amid Political Shift
Gyula Balasy, owner of several top media companies in Hungary, has offered to transfer ownership of his businesses to the state amid a new government transition. This move is seen as a pivot from Viktor Orban's allies, as the new prime minister pledges to tackle corruption and reclaim state assets.
In a surprising move, Gyula Balasy, an influential Hungarian media magnate, has proposed transferring his companies to the state. Known for his lucrative state contracts under the outgoing government, Balasy made the announcement in a video interview on Kontroll.
This announcement marks a significant departure from his long-standing alliance with Viktor Orban's administration, which was recently voted out of power. Peter Magyar, leader of the Tisza party and incoming prime minister, plans to audit state contracts and combat corruption as part of his governing strategy.
Balasy justified his decision by stating that his companies' tasks extended beyond typical market activities and suited the public sector. His firms were pivotal in orchestrating government campaigns including anti-immigration efforts, drawing scrutiny from Transparency International for their numerous state contracts.
