In a significant diplomatic engagement, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Beijing on Wednesday. The meeting comes amid increased international pressure on Iran to reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz to international shipping and negotiate a peace deal with the United States.

The talks, marking Araghchi's first visit to Beijing since the onset of the US-Iran conflict, aim at addressing the ongoing blockade of Iranian ports by the US, which seeks to force Tehran to lift its blockade of the Strait. China, Iran's major oil purchaser, has expressed concern over the region's instability impacting global oil and gas supplies.

The meeting also precedes US President Donald Trump's impending visit to Beijing for discussions with Xi Jinping on a comprehensive trade agreement. Meanwhile, Beijing continues to play a mediatory role, working with Pakistan and other Gulf countries to encourage Iran towards peace negotiations, amidst criticisms of the US blockade.
