Residents of north Delhi's Khyber Pass, including national pistol coach Samaresh Jung and his Commonwealth gold medalist wife Anuja, are facing forced eviction due to a scheduled demolition drive ordered by the Land and Development Office (L&DO). The drive is to take place on Saturday morning following a high court ruling.
During a visit to the area, PTI found several families urgently packing their belongings and seeking alternative shelter. Jung, who returned from the Paris Olympics recently, expressed shock at the sudden notice, questioning how residents are expected to vacate their homes within a day. His wife Anuja highlighted the lack of clarity in the notice that compounded their distress.
Jennifer Thomas, another affected resident, voiced concerns about the need for adequate compensation and shelter for displaced individuals. Many residents, having paid utility bills for years, are confused about their property rights. With rents in nearby areas skyrocketing due to the sudden demand, families are struggling to find affordable housing, forcing some to stay in their vehicles or on sidewalks. Babita, another resident, spoke about her fears of managing her family and medical needs following the demolition.
