A female cheetah is poised to give birth at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, an event celebrated as a major success for India's 'Cheetah Project'. Announced on social media by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, the impending birth highlights the project's achievements in restoring the cheetah population.
The initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2022, saw the release of eight Namibian cheetahs into the park, marking the world's first intercontinental translocation of these big cats. Subsequently, another 12 cheetahs from South Africa joined the ranks in February 2023, boosting the project's efforts.
Over the past two years, despite some setbacks, 17 cubs have been born with 12 surviving. With 24 cheetahs in total, including cubs, preparations are underway for their phased release back into the wild, starting at the end of October.
