In a concerning escalation, a Russian drone equipped with a high-explosive warhead struck the protective confinement shell of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Kyiv region, as confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. Despite the impact, radiation levels remain stable according to both Zelenskyy and the UN atomic watchdog.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m. local time, resulted in damage to the plant's structure and ignited a fire that has since been extinguished. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported no evidence of a breach in the internal containment of the reactor.

This latest development underscores the persistent nuclear safety risks facing Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. The IAEA has highlighted the increased military activity near Ukraine's nuclear plants, particularly the heavily contested Zaporizhzhia facility, and remains on high alert regarding any future threats.
