A lethal collapse of a food court roof at the Real Plaza Trujillo mall in northwestern Peru has led to six deaths and 78 people injured. The incident occurred on a busy Friday night when the iron roof fell on mall-goers.

Defence Minister Walter Astudillo reported at a Saturday press briefing that local firefighters confirmed five on-site deaths with a sixth individual succumbing at a healthcare facility. Thirty injured persons have been discharged, leaving 48 hospitalized, with three in critical state.

Trujillo's mayor, Mario Reyna, has shut down the centre due to immense risk and proposes thorough inspections of similar establishments. Rescue operations persist as Luis Roncal of the fire department acknowledged no recent signs of life but vowed continued efforts.
