Earthquake Shakes Thai Stock Exchange into Afternoon Closure
Trading on the Stock Exchange of Thailand was suspended for the afternoon after an earthquake in Myanmar sent tremors into Bangkok. All markets, including SET and TFEX, were closed, with trading set to resume the following Monday. The SET index had been pressured by U.S. auto tariffs.
In an unexpected turn of events, the Stock Exchange of Thailand halted all trading activities on Friday afternoon following a significant earthquake in Myanmar. The tremors resonated as far as Bangkok, prompting an immediate response from financial authorities.
According to a statement on its website, the Stock Exchange of Thailand announced a temporary closure affecting all markets, including SET, the Market for Alternative Investment (MAI), and the Thailand Futures Exchange (TFEX). Trading is scheduled to resume next Monday.
Before the shutdown, the benchmark SET index was trading at a more than one-week low of 1,175.45 points, down by 1.05%. The index had remained under pressure from new auto tariffs issued by the United States.
