In a significant environmental move, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has declared a ban on single-use plastics in pivotal cities and municipalities from October 2. The decision aims to transition the state into a model of sustainable practices and improved waste management systems, reflecting a commitment to ecological conservation.
The state government plans to establish 157 Reduce-Reuse-Recycle centers and launch three circular economy parks within a year. This shift includes an investment in modern machinery for waste-to-energy conversion, aiming to substantially reduce waste while generating economic value. Naidu's administration is preparing a comprehensive policy covering 11 sectors including municipal waste and electronics under the circular economy framework.
The initiative could significantly boost Andhra Pradesh's Gross State Domestic Product by Rs 15,000 crore annually. Furthermore, it sets the stage for the introduction of 'Swachhta' awards to encourage exemplary waste management practices, incentivizing innovation and sustainability across the state.
