Experts have sounded an urgent alarm over the imminent threat posed by 42 glacial lakes in Nepal. These lakes are at critical risk of bursting, potentially causing catastrophic damage to both lives and infrastructure. Discussions based out of Khandbari, Sankhuwasabha district's headquarters, highlighted the urgency of the threat.
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has classified these 42 glacial lakes as 'highly at risk' according to an official report. These water bodies, formed primarily at the foot of Nepal's numerous glaciers, could wreak havoc across Koshi province, especially around Bhotkhola and Makalu areas.
Efforts are underway by ICIMOD, in collaboration with local and international partners, to develop risk-reduction strategies while raising awareness about the looming threat. This initiative emphasizes protecting vulnerable groups including women, children, and the elderly, who are often the most impacted during such disasters.
