Mumbai’s Air Quality Sees Positive Shift: BMC Credits Pollution Control Efforts

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reports improved air quality in Mumbai due to various pollution control measures. Despite intensified monitoring, GRAP-4 isn't invoked. BMC's actions include enforcement on construction sites and promoting cleaner fuels, supported by favorable wind conditions, which all contributed to better air quality levels.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a significant improvement in Mumbai's air quality, attributing it to several pollution control initiatives implemented since November 26. These measures span across the city and its suburbs.

Despite the improvements, the stringent Graded Response Action Plan Stage-4 (GRAP-4) meant to tackle air pollution comprehensively, remains unimplemented in Mumbai, as confirmed by the BMC. However, intensified air quality monitoring has been ordered.

Municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has mandated firm actions against construction projects—both private and public—that fail to adhere to the 28-point dust and pollution mitigation guidelines. Additionally, the BMC noted that increased wind speeds have helped disperse pollutants, complementing efforts like misting, road-washing, and fuel shifts in bakeries and crematoria.
