Maharashtra's Forest Minister Ganesh Naik proposed an unconventional solution to the rising leopard attacks plaguing human settlements. He suggested releasing a large number of goats into forests, hoping that this would curb leopards' inclination to enter villages in search of food.
Responding to a call for attention by NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad, Naik highlighted that the state pays substantial compensation following deadly leopard encounters. Instead, he recommended forest officials invest Rs 1 crore in goats, luring leopards away from humans.
The Minister noted a shift in leopard habitats, which now often extend to sugarcane fields. Districts like Ahilyanagar, Pune, and Nashik report the highest incidents, underscoring the urgent need for effective mitigation strategies.
