A tragic fire in Shantou, southern China, claimed twelve lives on Tuesday night, reported state news agency Xinhua. The blaze ignited in a four-storey residential building at 9:20 p.m. and was extinguished in 40 minutes, leaving a community in mourning.

As investigations into the fire's cause are underway, this incident coincides with a rising death toll from Hong Kong's historic blaze, claiming 160 lives. It has prompted China's leaders to demand swift action on eliminating safety hazards within housing sectors.

In response to these tragedies, China announced a nationwide inspection of fire safety standards in high-rise buildings, following previous fatal incidents across the country, including a Hebei nursing home and a restaurant fire in northeastern China, taking 42 lives collectively.
