India, ranked ninth on the Global Climate Risk Index, has dismissed external rankings as a basis for forming domestic policies, according to a government statement made in Parliament on Thursday.
The Global Climate Risk Index, developed by Germanwatch, evaluates countries based on their exposure and vulnerability to extreme weather events. However, India's Minister of State for Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh highlighted challenges in isolating climate-related components from overall economic losses caused by such events.
India prioritizes a comprehensive approach through its National Policy on Disaster Management and the National Action Plan on Climate Change. These policies aim to enhance disaster resilience and guide climate action across all states and Union territories, ensuring preparedness and adaptive measures are locally driven and implemented effectively.
