Despite playing for the U.S., Collins has embraced support from Ireland, making new friends and collecting Olympic pins. Her Olympic debut comes as she plans to retire, hoping for a strong finish to her career.
American tennis player Danielle Collins isn't just getting support from her own country at the Paris Olympics. Irish fans have adopted her as one of their own, attributed to her Irish last name and heritage.
During her first-round victory over Laura Siegemund at Roland Garros, Collins noticed the presence of cheering Irish fans. 'A group of people that were Irish, and because of my last name, Collins, they came out to support me even though I'm American,' she said.
Collins' Olympic journey is her debut and coincides with her final season on tour. Following a surgery in 2021, the 30-year-old Australian Open finalist plans to retire to start a family. She aims to make lasting memories and perhaps secure a spot in the year-end WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia.
