Hugo Calderano Makes History at Paris Games
Hugo Calderano reached a historic milestone at the Paris Games, becoming the first table tennis player from outside Asia or Europe to reach the semifinals. Calderano defeated Jang Woo-jin 4-0 in men's singles and is determined to aim for a medal, facing either Omar Assar or Truls Moregard next.
Brazil's Hugo Calderano made history at the Paris Games by becoming the first player from outside Asia or Europe to reach the semifinals in table tennis.
Calderano secured his place in the history books with a resounding 4-0 victory over Jang Woo-jin in men's singles on Thursday.
The 28-year-old Calderano expressed mixed emotions after the milestone win, stating, 'It's really nice to represent a whole continent. At the same time, I want so much more. I want to keep going, reach the final and maybe even a gold medal.' Calderano will face either Egypt's Omar Assar or Sweden's Truls Moregard in the next stage, with Moregard having upset World No. 1 Wang Chuqin in the round of 32.
