Assan Ouedraogo's Leap to World Cup Triumph
Midfielder Assan Ouedraogo, called up to the German World Cup squad due to Lennart Karl's injury, faces a childhood dream realized. The 20-year-old replaces Karl after a muscle tear and brings experience having scored for Germany in a previous match against Slovakia.
Midfielder Assan Ouedraogo was vacationing in Marbella when he got an unexpected call-up to the German World Cup squad. The opportunity arose after Lennart Karl sustained a muscle tear during training, prompting manager Julian Nagelsmann to bring in the talented 20-year-old while Germany prepared for a friendly against the United States in Chicago.
"I got the call from the national coach while on holiday," Ouedraogo shared in a club website interview. "When Julian Nagelsmann informed me of my inclusion in the squad, I needed a moment to absorb the news before quickly packing my bags." This marks the second time Ouedraogo has been drafted in as an injury replacement; he previously scored against Slovakia when stepping in for Nadiem Amiri.
For Ouedraogo, representing Germany at the World Cup fulfills a lifelong dream. "It’s an immense honor and makes me very proud," he remarked. Despite the excitement, Ouedraogo expressed sympathy for Karl, wishing him a speedy recovery. Germany's World Cup journey kicks off against Curacao on June 14, followed by matches with Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
