The Netherlands' preparation for the FIFA World Cup has been dealt a severe blow with the announcement that key defender Jurrien Timber will miss the tournament due to a persistent groin injury, the Dutch football federation confirmed on Monday.

Timber, a 24-year-old full-back for Arsenal, last saw action as a substitute in Arsenal's UEFA Champions League final loss to Paris Saint-Germain. With a lack of recovery progress, Timber will depart the Dutch squad in New York following their final warm-up against Uzbekistan, according to their official statement relayed by ESPN.

National coach Ronald Koeman expressed regret over the decision but noted the necessity. Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida will fill Timber's spot, Koeman informed Dutch broadcaster NOS through ESPN. Despite the setback, Koeman refrained from blaming Arsenal for Timber's state. The Dutch team faces Japan first on June 14, following with matches against Sweden and Tunisia in their group stage.
