In its latest beta release, WhatsApp is rolling out a major privacy enhancement aimed at tackling one of its most enduring issues—spam, according to GSM Arena. The new feature, available in beta version 2.24.18.2 for Android, introduces a Username PIN system designed to bolster user security and minimize unwanted messages.

This new system allows WhatsApp users to set a four-digit PIN in addition to their username, providing an additional security layer. As per GSM Arena, the PIN ensures that individuals who have not previously interacted with the user cannot send messages using only the username.

This development is expected to markedly reduce spam and elevate privacy for WhatsApp users. 'Once implemented, this feature should greatly cut down on spam, which has been a prevalent issue on WhatsApp,' a spokesperson for the company stated, according to GSM Arena.

The PIN feature mandates that anyone wishing to message a user for the first time must know both the username and the PIN. In contrast, conversations with pre-existing contacts will remain unaffected by the new system.

The transition to using usernames will be seamless for existing connections, maintaining the continuity of current chats. Despite its promising benefits, the feature is still in the beta testing phase, and there is no confirmed timeline for its official rollout.

According to GSM Arena, given WhatsApp's typical development cycle, the username and PIN features may not be available to the general public until the end of the year. Users are encouraged to stay updated on progress through future beta releases as WhatsApp continues to refine this feature.

The introduction of the Username PIN signifies a proactive move by WhatsApp to address privacy concerns and enhance the user experience on the platform. (ANI)
