The Telecom Department's recent directive mandating that messaging apps such as WhatsApp can only function with an active SIM card has been hailed as a vital step towards bolstering national security. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) affirmed telecom operators' readiness to implement this regulation seamlessly.
The new SIM-binding requirement for communication apps ensures that the applications remain traceable and accountable, addressing longstanding concerns about anonymity and misuse. By mandating continuous linkage between apps and users' SIM cards, the directive aims to protect citizens and reduce instances of cyber fraud and spam.
COAI, whose members include major telecom players like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, has called for app service providers to comply with the directive within a 120-day window. Failure to adhere to the rules may lead to actions under the Telecommunications Act and other cyber security laws, emphasizing the importance of this national security measure.
